To the Multi-Breasted One — God Is Better Than We Think She Is, Part 7

A Poem to the Mother of Us All

By Anni Ponder

This poem came to me after I learned about the meaning of the Hebrew name for God El Shaddai. In our English Bibles, it’s usually translated as “The Lord Almighty,” but the true beauty of the name is only found in Hebrew. There, it denotes the mountainous, multi-breasted nature of God who nurses all Her children. It is in awe and reverence of Her that I offer up this piece.

All this talk of Father:

“His,” “Him,” “He.”

So specific, so overt, so manly.

And we, in His image.

We, fashioned after His likeness.

Who is this mysterious Spirit?

No matter, it is another Man.

But is It? Can It be?

El Shaddai, the Mountainous,

Multi-Breasted One.

If Jesus be the Son (and yea, He is),

Then is the Father a lone wolf,

a strange celestial single Dad?

And what of the Spirit?

An Uncle?

Surely they’re not two gay

MEN.

Why not She, the Mother, who

we say “conceived” the child

in Mary’s womb?

We’ve been raised, in our own

blind ignorance, by a

Single Father. And look at us.

Warmongers. Ambitious ladder-climbers.

Earth marauders.

Aggressors.

Fighters.

Warriors.

But what if we became aware that Mother’s gentle care and nurture were also our nature?

What if we honored

presence

intuition

knowing

being

collaboration

as much as the finish line?

Who would we be if we resembled HER?

If we honored SOPHIA as much as the Father?

Would we listen more?

Would we stop all this DOING

and embrace BEING?

Mother GOD, release the veil.

We want You–we need You!

Glory be . . . we ARE like You

after all!
